Total Knee Replacement
Knee osteoarthritis is a common condition caused due to the age related wear and tear of the articular cartilage. It is one of the most common condition seen by orthopaedic surgeons in the out-patient clinic. It is a gradual process which deteriorates over time and cripples the patient leading to severe restriction of day to day activities. It is classified according to kellgren-lawrence classification based on a standing (weight-bearing) X-ray of the knee joint.

Treatment options initially include life-style modification, wherein the patient is advised not to sit cross-legged, squat. Physiotherapy/Exercises in the form of Quadriceps strengthening , Knee Range of motion exercises are advised. Patient’s are also given NSAID’S (pain killers) to be used as and when required.
In the later stages when pain is unbearable, surgical option in the form of total knee replacement is offered. It is a surgical procedure which is done under spinal anaesthesia, wherein the lower ends of the thigh and leg bone which form the knee joint are replaced with a metal prosthesis.
